Our Team : Nepali Team and IFMGA Guide
The Nepali Climbing Team at Himalayan Travellers is dedicated to fostering strong relationships between foreign and Nepali climbers to enhance safety, enjoyment, and success during climbs. Additionally, our aim is to facilitate Nepali climbers’ participation in the IFMGA mountain guide course.
Our foundation is deeply intertwined with the evolving narrative of IFMGA Mountain guiding in Nepal. Currently, amidst complexities and uncertainties surrounding the roles and competencies of personnel operating above base camps, our Climbing Team offers a clear and distinct structure.
Within our team, there are four categories of High Altitude Workers:
- IFMGA Mountain Guides from foreign countries like Paulo Grobel.
- Nepali IFMGA Mountain Guides.
- Local Mountain Guides.
- Nepali Leader, seniors and juniors
Each role is clearly defined in terms of statute, qualifications, responsibilities, and remuneration. We consciously avoid the terms “Climbing Sherpa” or “High Altitude Sherpa,” recognizing that our team comprises individuals from various ethnic backgrounds such as Rai, Magar, Bhote, Sherpa, Tamang, Gurung, Ghale, among others.
Local Mountain Guide:
- Is an experienced mountaineer who has climbed numerous summits, primarily in alpine style without Oxygen
- Has undergone training with NMA & NMIA and completed specialized training such as “Learning by Doing” or “Recco trip” to prepare for expeditions.
- Possesses English language skills and continually strives for improvement.
- Although not yet an IFMGA Mountain Guide, can pursue this qualification with support from Himalayan Travellers.
- Represents Himalayan Travellers and serves as the official expedition leader recognized by the Nepal Government’s Mountaineering section of the Ministry of Tourism.
- Assumes leadership and responsibility throughout the climb, making decisions for all climbers, and ensuring their safety.
- Accompanies foreign climbers as much as possible, including during meal times.
- Has trained and worked with Himalayan Travellers, demonstrating leadership skills over a year.
